STIFTUNG MERCATORStiftung Mercator is one of Germany’s largest foundations. It initiates and funds projects that promote better educational opportunities in schools and universities. In the spirit of Gerhard Mercator, it supports initiatives that embody the idea of open-mindedness and tolerance through intercultural encounters, and encourages the sharing of knowledge and culture. The foundation provides a platform for new ideas to enable people – regardless of ethnic, cultural or social background – to develop their personality, become involved in society and make the most of the opportunities available to them. In this sense its aim is to give wings to people’s ideas. Stiftung Mercator takes an entrepreneurial, international and professional approach to its work, and has a particular affinity with the Ruhr area, the home of its founding family. Stiftung Mercator supports the research focus‚ "Climate and Culture" at the Institute for Advanced Study in the Humanities (KWI). POTSDAM INSTITUTE FOR CLIMATE IMPACT RESEARCH (PIK)The Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research addresses crucial scientific questions in the fields of global change, climate impacts and sustainable development. At PIK researchers in the natural and social sciences work together to study global change and its impacts on ecological, economic and social systems. They examine the Earth system's capacity for withstanding human interventions and devise strategies for a sustainable development of humankind and nature. PIK is part of a global network on questions of global environmental change. It closely collaborates with many international partners and is developing, together with the Tyndall Centre for Climate Change Research in the U.K., a European perspective of sustainability science. PIK plays an active role in activities such as the International Geosphere-Biosphere Programme (IGBP), the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) and the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment (MA). As a member of the European Climate Forum (ECF), the Institute is in direct and continuous exchange with decision-makers from the economy, politics and civil society. [www.pik-potsdam.de]

WUPPERTAL INSTITUTE FOR CLIMATE, ENVIRONMENT AND ENERGYThe Wuppertal Institute explores and develops models, strategies and instruments to support sustainable development at local, national and international level. Sustainability research at the Wuppertal Institute focuses on ecology and its relation to economy and society. Special emphasis is put on analysing and supporting technological and social innovations that decouple prosperity and economic growth from the use of natural resources. The Institute has always sought to communicate research results to its different target groups, addressing them in their own ‘language’. In the Research Groups, scientists with backgrounds in a wide range of disciplines collaborate in projects on international, national and regional levels. Focus Projects bring together core issues addressed by the research groups. In the Cross-Cutting Subjects scientists from different Research Groups join forces. [www.wupperinst.org]
