Daniel Cohn-Bendit
Co-president of the Greens/Free European Alliance Group in the European Parliament

Daniel Cohn-Bendit is co-president of the Greens/Free European Alliance Group in the European Parliament. He is a Member of the Committee on Economic and Monetary Affairs and a member of the Committee on Constitutional Affairs. He is also a substitute in the Subcommittee on Security and Defence.

Daniel Cohn-Bendit was born in Montauban, France on April 4, 1945, as a child of Jewish German parents. In 1966 he started his studies in sociology at the University of Nanterre, a suburb of Paris. He became known for being spokesperson and leader of the May-Revolution in Paris during the 60ies. After the riots, the French government expelled him from France. He returned to Germany and was one of the leading spokespersons when the so-called "Scene" officially accepted the parliamentary system and supported the party of the GREENS (Die GRÜNEN).

In 1984 he became a member of the Green party. In 1989 he became honorary city councillor for the newly established office for multi-cultural affairs in Frankfurt and stood for a clear immigration law, liberal rights and clear procedures of naturalisation. In 1994 he was a candidate of the German Greens and was elected to the European Parliament. From January 2002 he has been co-president of the Greens/Free European Alliance Group in the European Parliament. In upcoming EU elections he will once again be a candidate of the French Green Party and is first on the list of “Europe Ecologie”, an alliance of green politicians and environmental activists.
